Origin of Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love in many countries. On the 14th of February each year, the church also commemorates Saint Valentine, a poor priest who lived in Rome in the third century. According to tradition, he gave flowers from his garden to married couples. This signified that marriages he had conducted were always favoured by good fortune. The priest also married soldiers, who were not permitted to marry according to the antichristian Emperor Claudius II, in Christian ceremonies. The Emperor is said to have sentenced Valentine to death on the 14th of February of the year 269, making him a martyr. Saint Valentine is regarded as the patron saint of travellers, young people and beekeepers as well as friendship and love.
