Truly stylish espresso cups from Villeroy & Boch

So much thought goes into one little cup

Espresso cups are similar to normal coffee cups, except that they are a miniature version. The main reason for this is that one espresso portion is no more than 100 ml. The additional water for an espresso lungo is served in a separate glass, albeit on the same saucer if it fits. Secondly, the temperature of an espresso is key. Because the drink should be drunk as hot as possible, an espresso cup has a tapered shape with a small surface area. An espresso glass should therefore be double-walled in order to insulate the heat and prevent the espresso from cooling down too quickly. Every cup set from Villeroy & Boch has been designed to meet both your standards and those of the coffee.

Espresso? Espresso? Discussions at the coffee bar

There's no need to explain this to a connoisseur, but the incorrect term – espresso – still pops up now and again. This error leads to further errors: the word “espresso” is not linked to express, i.e. fast coffee, but to the Italian caffè espresso, which has its origins in the centre of Milan in around 1900. On request, the baristas prepared a strong coffee made from ground coffee and steam, in a cup. The speciality grew in popularity and quickly spread to other cities. To create its intensive taste, espresso needs a mixture of robusta and arabica coffee beans. The quality of the espresso can be seen in its complex bouquet of flavours and its robust, hazelnut-coloured crema.

The right porcelain for the “short black”

Depending on the collection, the espresso cups from Villeroy & Boch are made from radiant white premium porcelain or exclusive premium bone porcelain. Developed by us, this type of porcelain has a strikingly gentle shimmer. Careful polishing ensures that the surfaces are always smooth, allowing easy cleaning and protecting them from damage and scratches. Every cup and saucer is checked by hand, so that each item leaves us in immaculate condition. It takes real craftsmanship to produce the delicate espresso cup. So the cups are partially painted by hand while the special glaze makes them particularly resistant to impacts and scratches. Patterns made of precious metals are also protected by an additional liquid coating.

The best gifts come in small packages

A high-quality espresso set with cups and saucers combined with a packet of special robusta beans or even just decorated with a bow, is a popular gift for most coffee lovers. Choose between two-part and four-part sets and surprise your friends with delicately-designed espresso or mocha cups for a birthday or wedding gift. Because an espresso is not usually enjoyed as part of a meal, the motifs do not have to match the rest of the tableware. They can, but they don't have to. If you want a set of cups that matches your existing set, you can of course also order espresso cups from your favourite collection from Villeroy & Boch.
